GEPETTO’S LAW

In the fall of 2021, a galgo newly arrived in Canada ran away from home. During the 9 days of his escape, the EGP team in collaboration with Ge Cherche Charly volunteers spared no effort to find him and bring him home, but the most tragic outcome occurred when he was found lifeless, hit by a car. Following the terrible tragedy of Gepetto's escape and death, the EGP team asked themselves what we could do better as an organisation to protect our dogs.

In addition to the rigorous adoption process already in place (telephone interviews, home visits, adopter's guide, post-adoption supervision and sponsorship program), we needed to adopt new safety measures. To this end, EGP developed GEPETTO'S LAW, intended to be an educational and visual tool, but also a constant reminder of the extreme importance of respecting all these safety measures as second nature. Gepetto's Law is now discussed in detail during home visits and a copy is given to each adopter. Each rule is now also part of the adoption contract.

Among the new measures, EGP has decided to impose the wearing of a GPS tracker on all our dogs and the use of a leash tied around the adopter's waist connected to the 3-point harness is now mandatory upon their arrival on Canadian soil.

Gepetto's Law is also a promise to help all dogs, no matter where they are adopted in the world. It will be translated into 6 languages and made available to any adoption or rescue organization wishing to use it.

Together, let's protect our dogs and make sure this never happens again.
